Most Americans are subjected to over eight hours of the media everyday. The media has been linked to unhealthy body image, drug use, early sexual activity, and violence, especially in children. The main purpose of media education is to help people understand what they see everyday in magazines, on television, on the internet, and in other media outlets. It facilitates investigation into how the media affects people personally.

05.19.05 4:30 a.m. court street. athens, ohio
over 60 Ohio University students gathered under the leadership of stacy asher and dohyoung sung to re-present the black spots of chewing gum that dotted the sidewalks. the old spots were painted with non-toxic, flourescent pink tempera paint.

within an hour and a half both sides of the sidewalk were covered. the change in the landscape suprised town inhabitants and they wondered what the meaning of it was.

it started to rain that afternoon and within a couple of hours the spots had returned to their normal state.

Seniors were asked to document the billboards surrounding their college community. The billboards were then altered to illustrate 6 simple statements about themselves. Black & white typography [figures] on a black or white ground only was the formal limitation. No photographs or color was to be used. The Text becomes the image the image becomes the text etc....

a documentation of writings from my graduate study at the California College of the Arts. I was one of the initial recipients of an MFA in DESIGN. My thesis advisor, Gwen Allen, PhD from Stanford in graphic design history and theory wrote the forward to the publication. the theme of "bumps and dents" was incorporated into the publication. I chose to use the navel or belly button as a metaphor for the activities incurred during graduate study. all the navels were located in one issue of Cosmopolitan magazine.

The peony is among the longest-used flowers in ornamental culture and is one of the smallest living creature national emblems in China. Along with the plum blossom, it is a traditional floral symbol of China, where it is called 牡丹 (mǔ dān). It is also known as 富贵花 (fuguihua) 'flower of riches and honour', and is used symbolically in Chinese art.^[1] In 1903, the Qing Dynasty declared the peony as the national flower. Currently, the Republic of China on Taiwan designates the plum blossom as the national flower, while the People's Republic of China has no legally designated national flower. In 1994, the peony was proposed as the national flower after a nationwide poll, but the National People's Congress failed to ratify the selection. In 2003, another selection process has begun, but to date, no choice has been made.

The famous ancient Chinese city Luoyang has a reputation as a cultivation centre for the peonies. Throughout Chinese history, peonies in Luoyang are often said to be the finest in the country. Dozens of peony exhibitions and shows are also held there annually.

In Japan, Paeonia lactiflora used to be called ebisugusuri ("foreign medicine"). In kampo (the Japanese adaptation of Chinese medicine), its root was used as a treatment for convulsions. It is also cultivated as garden plant. In Japan it is said that Chinese people call Paeonia lactiflora "prime minister of flowers".

Pronunciation of 牡丹 (peony) in Japan is "botan". Before Meiji period, meat taken from quadrupeds was seldom consumed in Japan due to Buddhism. Thus in cases where such meat was handled, it was paraphrased using the names of flowers. The term botan was used (and is still used) to paraphrase wild boar meat. This comes from the flowery resemblance of the sliced meat when spread over a dish. Another example is sakura (cherry blossoms) which stands for horsemeat.

In 1957, the Indiana General Assembly passed a law to make the peony the state flower of Indiana, a title which it holds to this day. It replaced the zinnia, which had been the state flower since 1931.

Mischievous nymphs were said to hide in the petals of the Peony thus casing this magnificent flower to be given the meaning of Shame or Bashfulness in the Language of Flowers. It was named after Pæon, a physician to the gods, who obtained the plant on Mount Olympus from the mother of Apollo. Once planted the Peony likes to be left alone and punishes those who try to move it by not flowering again for several years. Once established, however, it produces splendid blooms each year for decades. (Taken from The Language of Flowers, edited by Sheila Pickles, 1990)

Peonies are also extensively grown as ornamental plants for their very large, often scented flowers.

Peonies tend to attract ants to the flower buds. This is due to the nectar that forms on the outside of the flower buds.

Art 459: Graphic Design and Social Change was introduced as a 400 level course at the Ohio University School of Art in 2006. The course surveyed an array of visual styles and printing media, dating from the Russian Revolution to the present in the form of artistic posters, non-commercial advertisements, and political propaganda. These types of collateral are ephemeral– rarely intended to last beyond their immediate moment. During the course, groups of students were assigned specific historical events or social movements to research and present relevant examples addressing the power of art and design to sway public opinion, organize and inform. A resulting DVD and website addresses the impact of this type of visual culture with the intent of informing activists of the power of art/design to inspire people to action.
